A 22-year-old Sebastopol man who led police on a nearly 7-mile chase up Gravenstein Highway late Wednesday night was finally stopped when a Sonoma County sheriff's deputy rammed his vehicle using a specialized technique, police said.
Archleon William Welton Bilderback was arrested for suspected drunken driving, felony pursuit, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license and was booked into the Sonoma County Jail, police said.
Bilderback drew an officer's attention on Highway 116 south of downtown shortly before 11:30 p.m. because the trunk of his gold Lincoln Continental was open, and a box and loose items inside appeared ready to fall out, police said.
The vehicle's registration also was expired by six months, police said.
The officer tried to stop Bilderback, but he instead drove northbound through town and toward Forestville, weaving through traffic and driving recklessly, police said.
Sheriff's deputies became involved, and one used a technique commonly used by law enforcement to force the fleeing vehicle to stop at Ross Station Road.
Bilderback was arrested and remained in the custody of the Sonoma County Jail on Thursday, with bail of $30,000, jail personnel said.
