Local horse in California Derby today

Condiment, co-owned by Occidental restauranteur Evelyn Negri, is one of the favorites to win today’s $100,000 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields in Albany.

The three-year-old was bred by trainer Joseph Brook and Joseph Negri, Evelyn’s late husband.

Condiment has run six times with one win and earnings of $62,206. Last year, the California-bred placed in the Cavonnier, Palmer and Gold Rush stakes races.

In the Cavonnier, decided Aug. 12 at the Sonoma County Fair, Condiment was beaten by Zeewat.

Zeewat is the morning line favorite in the California Derby.
