Sebastopol Center for the Arts begins hoop dancing lessons Tuesday (1/29). Classes are from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. each Tuesday for a month. $140 for four classes or $35 for each class. Contact holistichooping.com for more information.

Want to get up close and personal with hammerhead sharks? On Wednesday (1/30) Bodega Bay Community Association is offering a taste of the adventure when they bring in David Dann from the Bodega Marine Lab to give a talk and show a film about tagging the scary fish in the Cocos. It begins with a reception and refreshments at 6 p.m. and film begins at 6:30. It’s free and happens at Bodega Bay Community Center at 2005 Hwy. 1. Tuesday (1/29) there is an “Express Yourself” after school art class for kids eight and up at Occidental Center for the Arts from 3:30 to 4:46 p.m.It costs $75 for four weeks or $140 for eight weeks. Elliott Freed, Chinese medicine practitioner will give a talk titled, “Coming Home: Using Health Crises as Spiritual Doorways and Practices for Working With Them” Thursday, (1/31) at 7:30 p.m. at Many Rivers Books and Tea, 130 S. Thursday (1/31) artist Bill Wheeler offers a drop-in figure drawing session from 6:30 to 9 p.m. $15 covers the session and a live model who will hold 5-20 minute poses. On Friday (1/1) from 7 to 10 p.m. in the lounge at the French Garden Restaurant Bohemian Hwy, an Americana group will play music. No cover charge. French Garden is at 8050 Bodega Hwy. Call

It’s Mardi Gras time and there are two events in Sebastopol to celebrate the holiday. On Friday (2/1) the First Friday Live night at Sebastopol Community Cultural Center holds its Mardi Gras celebration with the Pulsators providing the music. There is barbecue for sale when doors open at 6:30 and beer, wine and snacks the rest of the evening. $10 for adults, and $5 for those under 18. Go to seb.org for information.

Then on Saturday (2/2) there is Mardi Gras Casino Night with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence . There’s food and games, lots of hot music. Tickets are $75 and fund the Laguna Foundation and the Sisters’ Community Grant Fund. It happens at the Laguna Center at 900 Sanford Rd. The tickets include a meal, some drink tickets and $100 of gaming chits. Call 527-9277 for reservations which are recommended for this immensely popular event.

At the Bodega Art Co-op 17135 Bodega Hwy. Carol Sklar will demonstrate making knotted fiber jewelry from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s a free event. Call 876-9830 for more information.

All day Saturday (2/2) from noon until 10 p.m. the Sebastopol Community Cultural Center will hold a guitar festival. Master guitarists Stevie Coyle and Mike Dowling will be on hand to share their talents. The cost is $40 for full access, $25 for just the main building, $20 just for access to the Annex building. On Sunday (2/3) there is a Brigid ritual and retreat to reclaim Celtic goddesses at Subud Hall at 4 p.m. The hall is at 234 Hutchins St. Cost is $7 – $21 on a sliding scale and no one is turned away for lack of funds. Call 484-7786 for more information.

Superbowl Sunday at the Tides Wharf bar features beer and food specials from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (as everyone celebrates the 49er wine!). Tides Wharf is at 835 Hwy. 1 in Bodega Bay. Call 875-3652 for more information.
